In this article we will not talk about calories or restrictions. The Mediterranean Diet is, above all, a lifestyle and a way of eating.
In fact, the idea is very simple. A very serious study (Seven countries study, and yes, you can Google it) was carried out on 13,000 people from 7 countries. It found that people living in Mediterranean countries had fewer heart problems, thanks to their balanced diet.
So, to live a long and healthy life, think of your diet (or stomach) as a pyramid.
At the top of the pyramid, where there is little room, are red meat and sweets. Occasionally it is not a bad thing to eat something, but it is not good to overdo it.
We go down a level and find poultry, eggs, cheese and milk. These are good for your health, but should be eaten in moderation. A little every day or a few times a week.
As we move towards the bottom of the pyramid, the restrictions become less severe. Here, fish is king, as are olive oil and avocados. We call them "good fats".
And now we have reached the base! As the name suggests, it's what you should eat every day. On your marks, get set, go! The list includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, herbs and nuts.
In the end, like everything else in life, the Mediterranean Diet is common sense applied to our dishes and menus.
